Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru Wins Nobel Prize in Literature

Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa has won the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature. He is the first South American to win the Nobel in literature since Gabriel García Márquez won in 1982.

According to the Nobel website, the prize was awarded to Mario Vargas Llosa “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt, and defeat.”

He has won a string of major literary awards, including the most prestigious of all for a Spanish-language author, the Cervantes Prize, and had often been tipped to win the Nobel Literature.

Even many peruvians (including me) was disappointed because he tooks on Spanish nationality in 1993 for his defeat and upset at the dictatorial turn of Fujimori’s 1990-2000 regime, we can't resisted to read all his wonderfull books. An now we are extremely happy because the Academy has recognized his hard work. He makes us proud of being Peruvian

Hot fair trade belt worn by Julia Roberts in “Eat, Pray, Love”

Fair trade fashions are getting a sunny boost from Eat, Pray, Love. In the film, Julia Roberts’ character not only saw totes around a fair trade Hobo Bag, but also wears a Fair Trade belt.

These belts are hand woven and embroidered by women’s fair trade groups in Peru. Each one is unique and one-of-a-kind. They look great with jeans, and skirts–just about any outfit looks better with one of these on your waist or hips.

Our last day we woke up early because we had work for do yet. We spent the day arranging the last details of the winter collection. After had a little lunch and having 2 hours before taxi will take us to the airport, we got ready and we used these free time for take our last pictures and buy some suveniers...

Sunday: quickly tourist visit at Cuzco city

Finally this day we can rest so we slept late, had a good breakfast at our hotel (a lot of fruits and juices) and then went to take photos in the city. Walking around the little cobbled streets of the historic centre we found "Cicciolina" restaurant. Lucky us it wasn't full yet... :) (one day before we wanted to book but it was full). It is a chic restaurant, probably the hottest and most stylish in Cusco. The restaurant looks ripped from the Tuscan countryside. The long and often boisterous country-elegant bar is decorated with bunches of garlic, peppers, and fresh-cut flowers and is a great spot for one of the excellent cocktails (such as a maracuyá sour), or dinner itself, especially if you're in the mood for creative tapas. The bar wraps around the kitchen area where a small army of cooks prepare your food. The high-ceilinged dining room at the back, one of the few places in Cusco for true fine dining, features high-backed chairs, deep-red walls, contemporary art, and large antique mirrors. The menu focuses on unusual spices and accents, with a number of adventurous dishes. You might start with porcini mushroom soup (topped with a pisco froth) or spicy barbecued calamari, prawns, and scallops, which is served with a minty rice noodle salad. Main courses include large, superb salads (including a yummy mix of rare roast beef and vegetables), excellent homemade pastas, and alpaca filet.

At night was another history, i get flu and i cant stop to sneeze but i decided go out anyway and we went to Tupanachis lounge, it has a great atmosphere, the salmon carpaccio was good and the three kind of cebiches very fresh i can say was a good dinner and great drinks even while not had all my senses good by the flu.

2nd day: Sicuani first and at night dinner at "Limo"

In our second day in Cuzco we spent all the day at Sicuani, because we had to work some samples for europe winter collection with our alpaca fur supplier. Sicuani is 3 hour from Cuzco, so you can imagine how tired we returned to the Cuzco city after 6 hours of travel and three hours more of work. After taking a shower and rest a few minutes we went in search of a nice restaurant with more light menu than Chi Cha and found "Limo". It is Strategically located next to the city's cathedral. We were offered a table on the balcony overlooking the principal square. The unbeatable view of the main square, making it a great way to get a glimpse of the city while sipping on a drink.

Hi friends
I'm sure you are wondering why i didn't post any news, well i was in Cuzco with my partner. Was a business trip but of course always there are time for some fun. Monica and i went to many trendy Cuzco restaurant like....

1st day in Cuzco: dinner in Chi Cha...
Even we didn't take any picture (we forget the camera at the Hotel lol) the food was unbelievably, Chicha is the first restaurant in Cuzco from Gastón Acurio, Peru’s biggest celebrity chef. The menu is focuses on Andean and regional ingredients. The dining room restaurant is set in a beautiful beamed ceiling colonial building. We ordered Lawa cream (Creamed Corn) with tortellini lamb, Huaracondo Pork and fried Guinea pig with Purple corn tortilla. Finally we can't eat more, we thougth we lose the opportunity to taste desserts :(, but the sweets snacks they served us when we were waiting for the bill were great!!!

Scissor dance (Danza de tijeras)

Many of you asked me about the dance that the Damari's video shows, it is the "scissors dance" or in spanish "danza de tijeras". This dance is original from Peru, the places with most influence of this dance are: Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Huancayo, Apurimac and Lima.

In this dance, two or more dancers(danzak)followed by their respective orchestras of a violin and a harp, dance in turns, doing explicit moves and challenging steps, such as dancing with just one foot.

Basically, the scissors dance is an impressive manifestation of physic art and skills, but to the Andean man it represents a complex ritual. A series of mysteries stalk around the dancers, Who, in a surge of force and elasticity, test their skills with the gymnastics-like jump at the sound of a harp and a violin, while they cut the air with their scissors (one in each hand)

According to the priests of the colony, its magical side obeys to an assumption pact with the devil, due to surprising moves or tests that they execute in the dance. This tests denominate Atipanacuy. The central instrument of the dance is the elaborated scissors of two independent metal plates of approximately 25 cm, and when the two plates are fused, they make a shape of a blunt-end scissor.

Peruvian coffee wins quality award from U.S. association

The high quality of Peruvian coffee has been recognized at the Coffees of the Year Competition 2010, where it was awarded with the highest Prize to Quality, and reached the fifth place during the first stage of the event, thus qualifying "Coffee of the Year” competition. “Tunki Coffee,” from Puno, the awarded coffee, competed in this category against other 140 samples from 25 countries. This coffee was produced by farmers from the Central of Cooperatives at the Sandia Valley, aka Cecovasa. Cecovasa reunites 4,800 producers in eight cooperatives from Tambopata and Inambari valleys, in the province of Sandia, in Puno. The fair is organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

In Peru you can find a lot of coffee's qualities and the most popular are not the better ones also you can find organic coffee, so if you go to a market look for the premium presentation, most of the best peruvian brands have this presentation. Even in Starbucks you can find Peruvian coffee... so there are not excuses to miss it.

Mario Testino's exhibition

For the first time in his career, one of the most influential personalities in fashion, photographer Mario Testino, will present an exhibition in his homeland, Peru, for the reopening of MALI (Lima Art Museum). Portraits gathers 90 superb photographs of celebrities like Pricess Diana, Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Kate Moss, Julia Roberts, The Rolling Stones, Brad Pitt and more... was first presented in London, in 2002, very much appraised by the international community. It then went on to Milan, New York, Amsterdam, Tokio and other parts of the World, and is now known to be Testino's most celebrated exhibition.
English top model, Kate Moss, is one of the international guests attending Mario Testino's 'Portraits' exhibition at the Lima Art Museum (MALI), she said “it’s wonderful to be in Peru”.
Also, Kate Moss flew over the Nasca lines in Ica, south of Lima, along with her boyfriend Jamie Hince, guitarist of the band The Kills, according to local media reports. The flight was on a Hotel Paracas private jet. Peruvian photographer Mario Testino, friend of the model, joined the couple on their journey to Paracas. The Bay of Paracas was the natural scenario for a photo shoot featuring the British supermodel Kate Moss, directed by the famous Peruvian photographer Mario Testino.

If you are in Peru, this exhibition will be open until 23th May. Don't lose the opotunity to visit the Museum.

I have found some very interesting issues about organic cotton and just wanted to share with you all. Hope you find it interesting, too!.

Organic Cotton Vs. Conventional Cotton

With a responsiveness of the amount of biological usage in cotton production and the resulting ecological loss, there is worry about conventional cotton production, and a move to nonchemical cotton production. Organic cotton making has low environmental collision and aims to build and keep soil richness and build a biologically varied agricultural routine.

Organic yarn is fiber that has been made without the use of chemicals. In this way the environment is not unnatural. Natural methods for fertilising the cotton undergrowth are exhausted and pesticides handling is avoided or kept to a minimum to ensure that there is the insignificant viable impact on the environment. This kind of production technique ensures that the yarn that is obtained is natural.

It is not a secret now that the demand for organic clothing is rising quickly. People are willing to buy more natural clothing to themselves to prevent from harmful chemicals that are used at several textile processes.

In that direction, nature & weather helps a lot to some countries. The wind for example helps a lot to protect the cotton from the bugs. You will definately want your fields to be on a windy place but this is usually a very rare situation.

Texas, Peru and Western Turkey have some serious advantages because of the wind and weather all season. This also brings the whiter and longer fibres along with the much better quality, handfeel and dyeing performance.

Berlinare 2009. Peruvian movie wins!!!!

I want to share with you this happy news: a peruvian film wins Berlin Golden Bear for best picture. This film is called "The Milk of Sorrow" and the director is Claudia Llosa. This film is her second work.
After her mother's death, the virtually silent Fausta (played by Magaly Solier) is determined to bury her in her native village but in order to do so must confront the malaise that afflicts her like a sickness.
The title is based on the idea that Fausta's mother passes sorrow on to her daughter through breast milk.
Sorry friends i can't find the trailer in english yet, but i hope this motivate you see this film.

Surfing the web i found these pictures from Topshop's S/S 2009. If i don't listening my favorite song in my iphone and remeber i took some pictures of my cutest little niece in the morning with this gadget, maybe i could think i'm crazy because seeing this pictures i'm convinced i'm in 90's again ...

Crazy or not these are the items for been fashion the next season: stone washed pants, bleached denim worn with more denim, studs, rips, florals and jumpsuits.

I already have the desire for buy a floral blazer and wear it with studded jeans.

What is an alpaca?

Alpaca is a native camelid from the high Andes Mountains of South America. Domesticated for centuries by the Inca. Alpacas lives on the level heights of the andes of Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Bolivia, and northern Chile at an altitude of 3500 to 5000 meters above sea-level.

Alpaca fiber is a light-weight, soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber. It is soft like cashmere and stronger than wool. This unique hollow core fiber is extremely light yet retains the ability to warm its wearer against even the harshest winter chills.

In "willka knitwear" we used it for produce sweater, coats, tops and accesories made by machine, hand knitting, crochet, etc.
